The Grand St. Bernard Pass
The Grand St. Bernard Pass is the best-known and the oldest pass of all crossings in the Alps. Archaeologists have found evidence that it was used by emperors, knights and simple merchants long before the birth of Christ. The superbly maintained path up to the peak will open up your eyes to memorable and panoramic views. The passage starts at the town of Champex, located 112 km away from Grachen.


Iserables
When in the area of Matterhorn valley, a visit to the ancient town of Iserables is simply mandatory. This town rises up from an incredibly steep slope, dropping 1,000 meters down into the valley below. You can feast your eyes on architecture characteristic of the area, such as special columns, barns built upon stone discs and old stone-shingled mazots. Iserables is located 85 km away from Grachen.


Sion
The town of Sion, 67 km away from Grachen, boasts an interesting historical attraction the Church of Our Lady of Valere. This is among the few old buildings in Switzerland that have not been renovated to perfection it appears as if it has not been touched since the time it was built. You will find objects from the 14th, 16th and 17th centuries inside. There is an organ, widely considered to be the oldest playable organ in the world, which dates from the 1300s. Other items of interest include fragments of 16th century murals, antique carvings and 17th century frescoes with scenes of the Passion.


Gorner Gorge
When in the Valais Alps, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to hike through the imposing Gorner Gorge, an activity that is fun and exciting for young and old alike. You will traverse the gorge above the creek with suspended bridges, flying foxes and a swing rope - like Tarzan! The adventure is perfect for families, clubs and groups of friends who want to spend a memorable weekend in the mountains. You can pass through the gorge in one day (day trip) or in two days, ascending nearby Breithorn (altitude of 4165 m) on the second. Be sure that you're in shape if you decide on the second option!


Riffelhorn
Climbing the multifaceted Riffelhorn mountain is a great adventure, entailing a magnificent panorama among other advantages. There are many scenic and pleasant routes. If you plan on conquering the Matterhorn, the Riffelhorn is a great way to train. You will get all the tips for a successful climb from a professional alpinist at the abseiling spots and fixed rope. Many rock walls and canyons are now accessible via pitons and steel cables. You will discover many wonders of nature as you make your way up, equipped with a harness, a sling and a helmet.


Bella Lui
Another natural attraction in the Matterhorn area is the Bella Lui peak, rising 2 543 m. It is accessible via cable car from Crans-sur-Sierre. The ascent offers panoramic views over the Rhone Valley. If you get too tired you can stop at Croix d'Er at 2 258 m.


Crans-sur-Sierre
The resort of Crans-sur-Sierre, lying at an altitude of 1,500 m, is located near several small lakes (Etangs de Lens) 77 km away from Zermatt. The resort is famous for its great ski facilities in the winter and its annual golf tournaments (played on one 9- and one 18-hole golf courses) in the summer. Crans-sur-Sierre offers hang-gliding, hot air balloon flights and other recreational opportunities during the summer season.
