Mischabel mountain range
The resort region of Saastal is virtually unknown outside Switzerland and Germany, which means that a holiday here is sure to be peaceful and quiet. The main natural attraction in the region is, of course, the Mischabel mountain range. Its most impressive peak, the Allalin, was immortalized by Andre Gide in The Counterfeiters many decades ago. It is just as impressive today, with avalanches, glaciers, precipices and spectacular views. The resort of Saas-Fee is encircled by the Mischabel range, with many peaks rising to altitudes above 4000 m. You will relish the unforgettable background of rock, ice and snow.
High Routes
Saastal is famous for its so-called high routes. These include the Hohenweg (high route) Balfrin and the Hohenweg Gsponer. The former is more isolated there are no restaurants, farms or villages along this route. It follows the high mountain ridges on the west side of the Saastal. As this route entails great elevation differences, you may get dizzy, especially if you suffer from low blood pressure. On occasion this route passes through tunnels carved in the hillside. The Mischabel peaks are the focus of the hohenweg. The Gsponer, named after the quaint mountain village of Gspon, is the livelier of the two with many people en route.
Ice Pavilion
The biggest ice grotto in the world, Ice Pavilion, is another of the wondrous natural attractions in Saastal. It is strangely intriguing displays include a crevasse located inside the Fee Glacier. The fees for the grotto are covered by the 7-day Hiking Pass. This pass is also includes a day of skiing or snowboarding, visits to the museums in the Saas-Fee resort, cable car and bus rides and visits to a number of other attractions.
