Kandersteg
Kandersteg is a village situated in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. It is notable for its sylvan alpine landscapes and spectacular mountain scenery. The village has been known since Roman times. In the 1860's its development as a tourist heaven started. At present tourism is a very significant component of its economic life. It is a year round mecca for mountain climbing and hiking trails, as well as cross-country and downhill skiing. Kandersteg is one of the most popular ice-climbing sites in the world. The ice-falls in Kandersteg capture the hearts of all ice-climbing fans. In the district of the Oeschi Forest there are some simple waterfalls that are excellent for courses, as well as much more difficult classic routes. The Allmenalp Waterfall is a very exciting tour but the conditions and temperature must be properly estimated before setting off.

Also, enjoy more than 50 kilometers of prepared tracks for skating and classical cross-country styles from 1200 to 2000 metres of elevation. Skate over the well-prepared cross-country trails around Kandersteg and enjoy the high alpine trails at Oeschinen and Sunnbüel above Kandersteg. The night track is illuminated until late in the evening.

The areas Oeschinen and Sunnbüel provide excellent conditions for skiing and snowboarding for families and individuals staying in Kandersteg. They feature 7 ski-, chair- and cablecar lifts. The pistes range from easy to fairly difficult. They are wide and open and have good visibility. In case nature provides too little snow, snow machines ensure continuous good skiing conditions. The ski areas are connected by a complimentary Sport-Bus.

The lifts can transport up to 2600 persons per hour. There are several cosy mountain restaurants. The areas are a paradise for ice-fishing as well.

Eating and drinking varies from simple but palatable dishes (some vegetarian) in the Bahnhofbuffet train station diner, to gourmet spreads at the luxury hotels. Dishes at the Ruedihus are incredibly good, with a choice between the wonderfully atmospheric Stübli below and the formal restaurant above. Most of the hotels along the main street serve food, but Victoria-Ritter prides itself on its kitchen – justifiably so, with the menu of astoundingly well-presented international cuisine, changing every two or three months.
