Meiringen is a charming town in the Bernese Highlands in Switzerland. It is famous as a ski destination and as…the place where Sherlock Holmes died. The best ski areas are Meiringen-Hasliberg and Axalp ob Brienz, offering excellent conditions for families and individual skiers alike. The area consists of 80 km of well-maintained ski runs. It is covered by 20 modern ski lifts, including the Eagle Express gondola to Planplatten. There are also 15 km of sledding runs, 40 km of hiking trails and 38 km of cross-country trails. The British have a long-standing appreciation for this ski resort. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle visited Meiringen a number of times. Today the main attraction in the town is the Sherlock Holmes Museum in the cellar of the English Church. The museum features a detailed replica of the detective’s study and taped commentary.
