Flims is a village in the canton of Grisons, Switzerland. It counts approximately 2 500 inhabitants and is famous for its winter sports possibilities (mainly snowboarding and skiing). The village makes part of the Weissarena resort that combines the formerly separate resorts of Flims, Laax and Falera. It regularly hosts international competitions such as the Burton European Open in snowboarding and the FIS World Championship in skiing.
The summer and winter resort is well known to the Swiss, who pack the place out consistently every
season, but is virtually unknown abroad. There are two parts to Flims – Flims-Dorf, the older, original village with most of the amenities and the base station for the ski lifts, and Flims-Waldhaus, a newer resort, hosting most of the hotels, set amidst larch woods and beech on a slightly higher elevation one kilometer away. Some 5km south of Waldhaus – across the German–Romansh language border –lies the quiet village of Laax, with the tiny Falera up a 3 km road completing the picture.
Flims, Falera and Laax all share the extensive “Alpine Arena” ski region, with a centre on the Crap Sogn Gion mountain (2228m of elevation), accessed by a cable-car from Laax-Murschetg on the edge of Laax village, and the Cassons Grat (2634m of elevation), served by a combination of chairlifts and a cable-car from Flims-Dorf. Falera has a chairlift to Curnius, halfway up the Crap Sogn Gion.
Beginners and intermediates are best served, with plenty of nursery slopes and practice areas around Waldhaus, as well as a host of blues and reasonably testing reds all over the mountain.
Eating and drinking is largely offered at hotels, with a handful of restaurants in Flims-Dorf, including the Central Restaurant, with menus of solid regional fare. Pomodoro, situated in Waldhaus, is an inexpensive pizzeria, while the restaurant at the Hotel Bellevue close to the Dorf lifts offers great food, including local specialties and plenty of vegetarian options. Locals also cherish the Meiler opposite, with much the same style.
