Laax
Laax is a wonderful ski resort, located in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, southeast of Zürich. It is a newer, purpose-built village, forming a part of the ski resort area Flims-Laax-Falera. Flims is perhaps a more traditional resort, Laax is a purer ski vacation experience and Falera is the most appropriate for those who want to combine skiing with solitude. The attractive ski area was discovered first by the Swiss and Germans, but due to the increased British and American visits in the recent years, the Alpenarena hosted the 2005 British Ski and Snowboard Freestyle Championship. Flims – Laax - Falera ski resort guarantees skiing on the Vorab Glacier from October to the end of April, with the cheapest rates from mid-March onwards. The interconnected snow area is one of the Alps’ largest ski complexes with its 220kms of groomed slopes for extensive and varied skiing and snowboarding. Convenient connection to the slopes is provided by some large-capacity lifts, including a jumbo gondola from Laax, a 3-stage gondola from Flims and several high-speed chair lifts. The cable car above Laax reaches the Crap Sogn Gion, at 7,283 feet, and there is a second, which continues to Crap Masegn, 650 feet higher. From this point, skiers can slide down into the valley to the lower cable car station or to Falera. The best areas for beginners are on Nagens and on Foppa, the Crap Sogn Gion is suitable both for intermediates and experts, experts can enjoy high-altitude slopes at the Vorab area, which presents great panoramas and skiing at 9,842 feet. For intermediates that would like to improve their technique, Swiss Ski School Flims Laax Falera offers special classes in all villages, such as carving, skicross and pipe. If skiers want to try more and various slopes, they can diversify with the resorts of Davos and Klosters, an hour away by car.

In Laax there is a newly built part with various hotels and apartments, just at the base of the Crap Sogn Gion cable car station. The more traditional and historic part of Laax is set around a lake, where you can find hotels, restaurants, a sport center and museum. Not only the major hotels are based here but also the major nightlife. Vibrant après-ski scene is presented as well, including ice-skating, hiking, tobogganing; curling; horse-drawn sleigh rides and ice stick shooting. More relaxed activities feature a fitness centre and sauna, ballooning and bowling, as well as indoor swimming/tennis. Choose among the wide selection of restaurants, bars and discos, or visit the lovely Elephant Mountain Restaurant, set at 2,500m.

As far as accommodation is concerned, Flims and Laax offer lodging possibilities of 11,000 beds in total, while Falera provides 3,500. For each one’s preference there is an option, as the selection varies from hostels to five-star hotels, from pensions to private apartments. In both alpine valleys, you can afford some impressively fine dining, with a great number of cafés and restaurants at the resort.
