Scuol is a municipality in the canton of Grison, eastern Switzerland, lying in the subdistrict of Suot Tasna within the administrative district of Inn. It counts 2 000 residents.
The Motta Naluns ski area (2146m of elevation, with lifts up to 2800m) offers a plethora of easy and intermediate runs (in total 80 km long), including thrilling, long reds from Piz Champatsch 12 kkilometers back down to Scuol. Scuol’s snowboarding school is the oldest in Europe, whereas the 4-km toboggan run from Prui to Ftan is to be enjoyed by all the
family.
The 3-km cross-country track with wonderful vistas over the magnificent mountain scenery is situated at 2,150 meters of elevation. The track starts at the Motta Naluns peak station. The latter is easily accessed by gondola of the Scuol-Motta Naluns cable-car.
Also, tracks left by hare, fox, marten and squirrel represent a true paradise for showshoers.
After the physical exhaustion on the mountain, one can spend the evening relaxing at the "Engadine Scuol" bathing and sauna complex. Situated in the centre of Scuol, the huge new complex offers a big range of pools and treatments, including both indoor and outdoor Finnish baths and saunas, as well as a magic two-hour session in the Roman-Irish baths which takes in the whole works: vapour baths, warm and hot rooms, mineral plunge pools, massages, etc.
Little used streets behind the baths goes down the hill into Scuol’s picturesque Old Town, filled with tinkling fountains, traditional houses and a marvelous village square. The view of Tarasp Castle on the opposite bank is now a little overshadowed by a modern hotel – the vista from Ftan is better – however the castle is still worth a closer look. Either buses or a ninety minute walk bring you to the gates. Remains of the restored castle have survived from its construction in 1040. It was a seat of the Austrian bailiffs of the region till Graubünden joined the Swiss Confederation in 1803.
