The Swiss word "Interlaken" actually means "between the lakes". The town situated between the lakes of Thun and Brienz in the German-speaking region of Switzerland is called Interlaken - of 14,500 population including foreign workers. The town is the gateway into the Oberland, linked into main train routes to and from Bern and Zürich, with branch lines to all directions into the high Alps nearby. Nowadays Interlaken is both summer and winter resort.

Winter activities
The Jungfrau Top Ski region has at disposal over 160 km trails with connection to Interlaken by a mountain railway. The spacious ski area is Kleine Scheidegg-Mannlichen, which includes the area between Wengen and Grindelwald. The site has 35 marked trails, and is especially convenient for the intermediate skier or boarder. Mannlichen in particular is popular with snowboarders, having a variety of terrain and no surface lifts. The ski runs at Interlaken consist of 30% beginner traces, 50 % intermediate, and 20 % advance skiing slopes. Snowboarding is available with a terrain park and two half pipes. About 22,000 skiers per hour are transported by 48 ski lifts, including two gondolas/trams that operate over the entire range of the ski field. The skiing season lasts from November to April, with the busier times being Christmas and New Year.

Kursaal - built in 1859 combines the Victorian style with the atmosphere of Oberland chalet. With the years it has been finded to be the social focal point of the city, with plays and concerts being presented here and on special occasions folklore evenings are also held.
Schlosskriche - used to be the chapel for the Augustinian monastery, most of the Schlosskriche has been turned into a private castle with office spaces. All that's left of the original buildings is a 14th century chancel and a branch of the monastery. Although it still is a great way to see some of the historical buildings of Switzerland.
