Skiing in Saas Fee

Switzerland offers you such a variety of ski resorts, that you might feel a bit overwhelmed when the time comes to choose the exact location for your stay. Most of the places have such a wide variety of opportunities for skiers of all levels of ability and desires. At first glance they all look the same - top quality.

But if you scrutinize them a little bit, you will notice the differences. For example, at Saas Fee there has never been traffic of cars. This is a pure mountainous place, where people experience the sublime feeling of getting back to nature in all its force.

Since 1951 the car traffic reaches up to a big car-park which is actually outside and before the village. Electric-powered cars shuttle in and out of the resort and will bring you fast to your hotel or chalet.

The resort is situated in the foot of the highest mountain in Switzerland - the Dom; at 234 km from the capital Geneva (also the nearst international airport). One of the highest skiable verticals waits for you in Saas Fee and quietly challenges you. Total amount of ski-runs: 100 km. Longest run is 11 km. Cross country is offered (8 km). The lifts that are in service are 26 (17 surface, 2 chairs, 3 gondolas, 4 trams). Snowboarders can enjoy their stay here, too for there is a snow park with half-pipe.

Skiing started to develope here in the early 1960s. Yet the settlement has existed there for centuries, and in 19th century there were as many as 250 inhabitants (which was big for such a highly-situated village in the past). Since the 60s many technical innovations and hi-tech lifts were installed so the capacity of receiving tourists rose significantly and everything is very well organized. The highest revolving restaurant in the world is in Saas Fee - at the stunning 3500 m. There is an underground railway which leads to the glacier ski area (one of the 5 largest skiable glaciers in the world).

The resort is calm and peaceful, yet in the evening you will find many amusements. There are some wonderful sports and leisure complexes here, both in and outdoors. More than 60 restaurants are at your disposal.

The Mittelallalin glacier offers ski all year round. It is open for visitors usually in late June and stays open through to the end of the winter season. During the summer 4 lifts are open, letting you access approximately 20 km of runs. Saas Fee is the summer paradise for snowboarders - the Swatch Snow Park Allalin with three halfpipes (each 80m long), one quarter pipe, one rope tow, a boardercross (which is permanent), a giant slalom for alpine snowboarders, rails, gaps and test runs in order to make races. Having said this, it is no surprise that Saas Fee is the Official Training Centre for the Professional Snowboard Association (sub-branch of the International Ski Federation).
