Skiing in Wengen

Wengen, one of the high-quality Swiss ski resorts is situated in the heart of the country, 190 km from Zurich; 200 km from Geneva and 70 km from Bern. Switzerland is the country with perhaps longest traditions in ski.Wengen functions as top ski resort since the 19th century. Photographers rate it among the most spectacular sights, so bring along your camera when you come to Wengen. With the increased environmental awareness, many resorts adopted the car-free policy - Wengen is one of them. Davos is the resort which presented open air lifts for the first time in the world, and uphill transportation were showed for the first time in Wengen (the railway to Kleine Scheidegg, comlpeted in 1911).

From the beginning of the twentieth century, the place has been favourite destination of many British tourists. The resort was the place where the famous Downhill Only Club (DHO) was founded in 1924 - the British visitors managed to persuade the local people to build the upward transportation, so that no time is wasted on going up, and they go 'only downhil'.

You can enjoy the 160 km of ski runs, go to the neighbour resort Grindelwald for further 40 km; also you can go accross the valley at Murren on the Jungfrau Top Ski Lift. Cross country skiing is 17 km.

Children and beginners are specially taken care of, as there are many practice slopes, which are easy (blue, green). There are abouy 70 ski teachers available. The ski schools offer group and individual education in various languages. There are natural and artificial ice rinks.

Curling is a sport which is particularly loved in Wengen. There are 8 curling rinks on the big artificial rink, a curling hall with 3 rinks, and many curling competitions are organized.For those of you who prefer less-active recreation, there are more than 20 km of well marked paths for walking and easy hiking.For the tobogganers there are pleasant surprises. This exotic leisure time activity can be practised in Wengen.

The biggest surprise yet in Wagen is one of the most rare things one can see in ski resorts - the so called 'heli-ski' and helicopter walks.Apres-ski you'll be able to enjoy the many indoor pools, indoor tennis courts, squash courts, saunas and solariums...

Little children can be given to the care of the people from the nursery kindergarten. While your children play, you can also hang-glide - or play billiards or bowling...
