Crans Montana
Crans-Montana is a ski resort situated in the heart of Swiss Alps in the canton of Valais. It is famous for organizing the 1987 Alpine skiing World Cup. The town has also many golf tournaments, and besides every year in September there take place the Omega European Masters, an event from the PGA European Tour.
Crans Montana is one of the biggest Swiss ski resorts. Along with St Moritz and Verbier, it’s also one of the glitziest, with what the tourist office like to name the finest shopping in the Alps. The resort at present comprises three villages, Montana , Crans-sur-Sierre, and, out on a limb, Aminona. The agglomeration stretches for more than 2 kilometers between Montana, to the east and Crans, to the west, with nothing to mark the shift from one to another.

Extending as far as the eye can see, over 160 kilometers and 28 lifts, the pistes regularly put the resort in the spotlight of international sports scene. Lessons of ski, carving snowboard, snowbike, nordic-ski and telemark, ski-hiking or ski touring, downhill with light torch, heli-sking and ski off pist are among the host of winter sport activities offered by the resort.

Access to the pistes, almost all of which are blues and redsр is extremely scenic and via five gondolas situated along the base of the mountain. From west to east, the pistes are Chetseron and Crans, Grand Signal in Montana, Violettes close to the Montana funicular station, and Aminona. The woods above Montana are cut by red runs winding between the trees, whereas Cry d’Err above Crans has a number of lifts serving blues down to the village. Violettes gives access to the Plaine Morte top station (3000m of elevation), with some exciting blues, as well as the start of a long meandering red back to the village.

Skiing aside, the resort is also known for hosting the European Masters golf tournament every year in September, second only to the British Open for reputation and top names. Crans’s course – “by far the most spectacular tournament site in the world” to the words of Greg Norman – was redesigned in 1999 by Seve Ballesteros, and now boasts a fiendishly complex upturned-saucer greens.

Besides, Crans-Montana offers paintball, karting on ice, as well as hot-air balloon flights. An Alpine Museum and a casino, as well as a number of galleries, concert halls and top-fashion shopping facilities complete the long list of attractions and activities at the resort.
