Leysin is a commune in the Swiss canton of Vaud, situated in the district of Aigle. A sunny alpine resort village at the eastern edge of Lake Geneva, it is close to Geneva, Montreux and Lausanne. In the past it was known for its sanatoriums for tuberculosis. However, today it is a destination for year-round mountain sport and recreation.
The resort is at an altitude of 1263 m and offers wide-open landscapes for cross-country, as well as for snowshoe tours and skiing for all levels of abilities. The Tobogganing Park, in turn, promises
outrageous fun and an unforgettable time on Europe's largest snow tubing facility. And if you prefer to be a spectator, attend the yearly Nescafé Champs Open in Leysin. Les Mosses - La Lécherette, a true bastion of Nordic skiing, also hosts a number of international cross-country skiing competitions. Besides, Leysin is home to numerous renowned international private and boarding schools.
In addition, enjoy the perfect conditions for winter hiking and ice skating, or take delight in the picture-postcard panoramic vistas of the Valais Mountains and the sumptuous cuisine on offer at the Kuklos revolving restaurant, at 2000 m of elevation.
And when the day is over, one can relax in Lavey's thermal baths or attend the two sport centres offering over 20 activities (including climbing walls, Olympic sized swimming pool, saunas, indoor tennis courts, weightlifting rooms and sports halls). Other sport activities include squash courts, mini golf, soccer pitches, archery, beach volleyball, street basketball, ropes course, etc. In addition, Leysin is ideally located for excursions both within Switzerland and to other European countries.
Leysin was also once famous around Switzerland for its giant August rock festival – but major difficulties with crowd control and financing closed it a few years back. Until things can be sorted out again, a low-key Alpine Music Festival has taken its place.
